Expired Drugs Saga: Anambra Health Ministry Clears, Reopens Rex Universorum Hospital Mmiata Anam

The Anambra State Ministry of Health has certified IHM Rex Universorum Hospital, Mmiata Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area, fit for operation following concerns raised by members of the public over the facility’s operational status.

The development followed a meeting between a delegation from IHM Rex Universorum Hospital and the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, in Awka. The delegation was led by Sr. Dr. Ameke Maria Sapientiae.

Acting on the concerns, the Ministry promptly deployed an inspection team to the hospital to assess its compliance with established healthcare standards.

The inspection covered the facility’s drugs, medical equipment and other requirements considered necessary for effective healthcare delivery.

Speaking on the outcome, Obidike said the inspection established that the hospital possessed the basic facilities and equipment required to operate, leading to its certification by the Ministry.

“The assessment showed that the hospital has the basic facilities and equipment required for its operations, and it has therefore been certified by the Ministry,” the Commissioner said.

Obidike said the action underscored the state government’s commitment to ensuring that health facilities operating in Anambra meet prescribed standards and provide safe and quality healthcare services.

He stressed that the mere existence of a hospital building does not guarantee effective healthcare delivery, noting that facilities must have appropriate equipment, qualified personnel and a conducive environment.

“Having a hospital in place is not enough. Healthcare facilities must have the necessary equipment, qualified personnel and a conducive environment to provide effective medical services,” he said.

The Commissioner added that regular monitoring and supervision remained essential to ensuring that health facilities maintain compliance with government regulations.

He urged residents to verify the accreditation status of health facilities before seeking medical treatment and to report suspected cases of unsafe or illegal practices to the appropriate authorities.

Obidike also advised residents not to depend exclusively on social media to report irregularities in health facilities, explaining that the government had established a direct reporting mechanism through accredited healthcare facilities.

According to him, every accredited health facility is required to prominently display a verified government accreditation sticker containing an official telephone number.

He encouraged anyone who notices a suspected irregularity to use the number displayed on the accreditation sticker to alert the government for prompt intervention.

The Commissioner assured residents that the Ministry would sustain inspections and supervision of health facilities across the state.

He warned that facilities operating without the required accreditation or failing to meet prescribed standards would face appropriate sanctions, including possible closure.

The Ministry’s action highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in ensuring that healthcare facilities across Anambra maintain the standards required for safe and effective medical care.
