Ghana’s Tallest Man Dies at 33 After Long Battle With Rare Medical Condition

What was meant to be a story of resilience and hope has ended in heartbreak. Ghana is mourning the death of Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as Awuche, the country’s tallest man, who died at the age of 33 after a prolonged battle with a rare growth disorder and other health complications.

According to reports, Awuche passed away on Monday while receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in northern Ghana. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media, with many remembering him as a humble, cheerful, and resilient man who inspired thousands despite the physical and emotional challenges he faced.

Standing at approximately 7 feet 4 inches (2.23 metres), Sulemana became internationally known after his remarkable story was featured by the BBC in 2023. Initial claims that he measured 9 feet 6 inches were later corrected after proper measurements revealed his actual height. His extraordinary stature was caused by acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that results from excessive production of growth hormone.

Over the years, Awuche endured numerous health challenges linked to his condition, including mobility difficulties and recurring medical complications. Despite his struggles, he remained optimistic about life, often expressing his desire to marry, raise a family, and continue supporting others living with rare medical conditions.

Just weeks before his death, reports indicated that philanthropists had stepped in to assist with his medical treatment after his deteriorating health drew public attention. Sadly, those efforts were not enough to save his life.

“He inspired many through his courage and determination despite living with extraordinary physical challenges,” mourners wrote in tributes shared online following news of his passing.

His story touched people far beyond Ghana’s borders, highlighting the difficulties faced by individuals living with rare endocrine disorders, particularly in communities with limited access to specialized healthcare.
