A major disaster was averted on Wednesday after a 45,000-litre diesel tanker overturned and spilled its contents along the Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State.
The incident, which occurred opposite the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office, reportedly involved a Shafa Petroleum tanker conveying Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, and a Toyota Sienna vehicle.
Preliminary findings indicated that the accident might have been caused by brake failure resulting from an air leak in the tanker’s braking system.
Although no casualties were recorded, the tanker’s cab reportedly sustained about 60 per cent structural damage, while its cargo compartment remained intact.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Fire Chief, Engr. Chiketa Chukwudi, said the prompt response of firefighters prevented a possible fire outbreak and further disaster.
According to him, the distress call was received at 1:08 p.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters to the scene.
He said: “Anambra State Fire Service has successfully prevented a potential disaster following the overturning of a 45,000-litre Shafa Petroleum tanker loaded with Automotive Gas Oil (AGO/Diesel) along Awka Expressway, opposite the FRSC office, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.
“Preliminary findings suggest possible brake failure caused by an air leak in the braking system.”
Chukwudi explained that firefighters carried out continuous damping-down and hazard mitigation operations to eliminate potential fire risks.
He added that the diesel cargo was safely transferred into another tanker under fire safety supervision, while the affected scene was secured and eventually declared safe for traffic.
“The diesel cargo was safely transferred into another tanker under fire safety supervision, and the scene was secured and declared safe for traffic,” he stated.
The Fire Chief disclosed that firefighters withdrew from the scene at 5:56 p.m. after successfully completing the operation.
He urged motorists, particularly tanker operators, to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, ensure that their braking systems are in good working condition and promptly report emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
The successful intervention, he said, underscored the importance of rapid emergency response in preventing road accidents from escalating into major disasters.
