AnambraI Govt Issues Flood Alert as NiMet Predicts Above-Normal Flooding

The Anambra State Government has issued a flood alert to residents following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) warning that the state is among those likely to experience above-normal flooding this year.

According to the government, Anambra’s location within the Delta belt makes it particularly vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.

The warning was contained in a joint statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, and the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi.

While assuring residents that proactive measures were being taken to minimise the impact of the anticipated flooding, the government urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety throughout the rainy season.

“Residents are therefore strongly advised to remain vigilant and take the NiMet prediction seriously throughout the rainy season,” the statement said.

The government also advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall, whether on foot or by vehicle, and to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.

It further urged people living in flood-prone communities to relocate to safer areas where necessary and seek assistance promptly in the event of emergencies.

“Government reiterates its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and solicits maximum cooperation from the public,” the statement added.

Residents are therefore encouraged to monitor weather updates and comply with safety advisories as the rainy season intensifies.
