Four male adults have been confirmed dead, while another sustained injuries in a fatal road accident along the Awka–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State in the early hours of Monday.

The crash, which occurred at about 4:31 a.m. opposite the old Government House in Awka, involved a white Toyota Camry with registration number ASB 264 AV carrying five male adults.

The vehicle reportedly veered off the road into a drainage, hit a culvert and somersaulted, allegedly following excessive speeding.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, SRC Margaret Onabe, said four occupants died, while the fifth sustained injuries.

According to Onabe, the victims had been evacuated to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team.

She disclosed that three victims were initially confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary, while the fourth was later taken to Apex Hospital, Awka, where he was also confirmed dead.

“The accidented vehicle was recovered and towed to the FRSC Command, while some personal belongings, including cash amounting to ₦185,300 and a car key holder, were recovered,” Onabe stated.

She added that the injured victim was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The FRSC Sector Command expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.

Onabe further disclosed that the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, sympathised with the bereaved families while warning motorists against excessive speeding, particularly during the early hours of the morning when visibility could be significantly reduced.

The Sector Commander urged drivers to obey speed limits, maintain proper control of their vehicles and ensure that their vehicles were equipped with functional safety devices, including approved speed-limiting devices.

“Motorists are also reminded that speeding significantly reduces reaction time and increases the severity of road traffic crashes.

“All road users are therefore urged to prioritise safety and exercise maximum caution while travelling. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” she cautioned.

The FRSC reiterated its commitment to promoting road safety and urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and comply with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable crashes.
