104 Anambra Markets Battle for Glory as ASMATA Traders Sports Competition Kicks Off

The pitch is set, markets are mobilising, and competition for sporting supremacy among Anambra traders is about to begin as 104 markets prepare to battle for honours in the 2026 Anambra Traders Sports Competition, organised by the Anambra State Market Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA).

The competition, themed “Unity, Teamwork and Fair Play for Stronger Markets,” begins with the men’s football event on September 13, with preliminary matches at designated venues across the state’s seven market zones.

The zones include Aguata, Awka, Idemili, Nnewi, Ogbaru, Onitsha and Oyi.

Speaking with journalists in Awka on Friday, ASMATA President-General, Chief Humphrey Anuna, said the competition would feature sporting activities designed to promote unity, healthy living and stronger relationships among traders.

According to him, events include women’s football, draught, Ncho, tennis and table tennis.

‘It Will Be Bigger, Better and More Exciting’ — Anuna

Anuna described the 2026 edition as an opportunity for traders to showcase their sporting abilities while strengthening bonds across markets.

“This year’s competition promises to be bigger, better and more exciting. We are encouraging members of the public to come out en masse and enjoy the best of sports from our traders,” Anuna said.

He explained that participation was compulsory for all registered markets in Anambra State, noting that the initiative would promote traders’ health and well-being while improving interaction among market associations.

The ASMATA leader urged traders to embrace the competition in the spirit of teamwork, unity and fair play, in line with its central theme.

Medical Checks, Identification Cards Mandatory

The ASMATA President-General disclosed that all participating players must carry valid ASMATA identification cards.

He added that participants must undergo medical fitness checks before each match to ensure proper identification and safeguard their health.

He also announced that attractive prizes would be presented to outstanding winners at the conclusion of the tournament, providing an added incentive for markets to compete for honours.

Anuna Commends Soludo, Reaffirms Traders’ Support

The ASMATA President-General commended Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for his efforts to improve conditions in the state’s markets.

Anuna assured the governor of traders’ continued support for his administration, while emphasising collaboration between market associations and the government to advance market development.

With 104 markets expected to participate, the competition will combine sporting rivalry with opportunities for improved interaction, physical fitness and solidarity among traders across Anambra State.
