What began as an ordinary Monday morning in Ideani, a quiet community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, quickly descended into one of the most disturbing incidents the area has witnessed in recent years.

By midday, grief had replaced routine as the lifeless bodies of three children were recovered from a building operated by a woman who allegedly identified herself as a Christian minister. Nearby, a fourth child clung to life and was rushed to hospital under police escort.

The suspect is now in police custody, while investigators work to establish exactly what happened inside the compound that residents once believed was a place of prayer.

“This is a tragedy that has shaken the entire community. Everyone wants answers,” a resident who witnessed the police operation told this reporter.

A Distress Call That Changed Everything

The first alarm was reportedly raised on the morning of Monday, August 3, 2026, when community leaders received information that four children had spent the night in the woman’s residence under circumstances that remain unclear.

According to the President General of Ideani Community and Secretary of Idemili North Local Government, Hon. Engr. Paul Okoye, he received an urgent telephone call from the Chairman of Umuoduba Village between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

“I immediately contacted the Divisional Police Officer of Ogidi Division and informed the Mayor of Idemili North. They responded without delay,” Mr. Okoye said.

Before emergency responders arrived, three of the children had already died, while the fourth was found alive but in critical condition.

Police immediately evacuated the survivor to hospital, hoping the child would recover and help investigators piece together the events leading to the deaths.

A Ministry Under Suspicion

For many residents, the suspect was known as a woman running what she described as a Christian prayer ministry.

Community records, according to Mr. Okoye, showed that she introduced herself as a minister when she settled in Ideani. She also reportedly operated piggery and poultry businesses within the same premises.

That perception changed dramatically when security operatives conducted a detailed search of the property.

Mr. Okoye alleged that investigators discovered objects he described as fetish materials and shrine-like items inside parts of the compound.

He further claimed that the suspect told community leaders she was an “Ezenwanyi” practitioner, although he said she did not provide any certificate or documentation to support the claim.

The police have not officially confirmed the nature or significance of the recovered items, and forensic examinations are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

“The impression that this was simply a Christian ministry is completely different from what we encountered during the search,” Mr. Okoye alleged.

Search Uncovers New Questions

Officials said the first police team that visited the property was initially unable to access some sections of the building.

However, after the suspect was returned to the scene, investigators reportedly gained entry to additional rooms, leading to further discoveries that have not yet been publicly disclosed by the authorities.

An ambulance later evacuated the bodies of the three deceased children to a morgue, where autopsies are expected to determine the exact cause of death.

As of the time of filing this report, police had not released official medical findings.

Community on Edge

The incident has triggered fear, anger and disbelief across Ideani.

Crowds gathered near the property throughout Monday, with some aggrieved youths reportedly threatening to destroy the building before community leaders intervened.

According to Mr. Okoye, the Mayor of Idemili North, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, worked with the police to calm tensions and prevent reprisals.

“We appealed to our people not to take the law into their own hands. Justice must follow due process,” he said.

The Mayor also notified the Special Adviser to the Governor on Homeland and Community Security, Chief Ken Emeakayi, requesting additional security support and further assessment of the scene.

Investigation Intensifies

Police have taken the suspect into custody while detectives continue gathering evidence.

Investigators are expected to rely on forensic examinations, witness statements and, if the surviving child recovers, a firsthand account of what transpired inside the compound.

Authorities have yet to announce any formal charges, emphasizing that investigations remain ongoing.

Under Nigerian law, the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction.

For grieving families, however, legal processes offer little immediate comfort.

Three young lives have been lost. Another hangs in the balance. A community once drawn to what it believed was a place of worship now finds itself confronting painful questions about trust, child safety and accountability.
