August Meeting 2026: Anam People’s Assembly Urges Women to Protect Family Values, Reject ‘Ego Mbute’ Culture

As thousands of Anam women join their counterparts across Igboland for the 2026 August Meeting, the Anam People’s Assembly (APA) Worldwide has called on mothers to take the lead in safeguarding family values, rebuilding moral standards, and protecting the next generation from social vices threatening the community.

In a goodwill message marking this year’s annual gathering, the Assembly described the August Meeting as more than a cultural tradition, calling it “a vital platform where women deliberate on issues that shape the future of their communities.”

APA in a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Chief Alex Okonkwo and Secretary, Chuma Ozemene NdubaChibogu congratulated the Anam People’s Assembly (Worldwide) Women Wing and other women groups participating in the conference, expressing confidence that their deliberations would contribute meaningfully to tackling crime, promoting development, and strengthening community growth.

Rising Divorce Rate Raises Concern

The Assembly expressed deep concern over what it described as the increasing rate of marital breakdown among young Anam women, warning that the trend poses serious consequences for family stability and child upbringing.

“One of the greatest burdens confronting our community today is the growing number of broken homes. The effect is felt most painfully by our children, whose future depends on stable families and responsible parenting.”

APA urged mothers to initiate sincere conversations within homes and communities that would encourage stronger marriages, peaceful conflict resolution, and responsible family life.

APA Warns Against ‘Ego Mbute’ Culture

Another major concern raised by the organisation is the growing acceptance of what is popularly called ‘Ego Mbute’—the pursuit of unexplained or quick wealth.

According to the Assembly, the trend is gradually replacing the long-held Anam virtues of diligence, honesty, contentment, integrity, and hard work.

“When a society begins to celebrate wealth without questioning its source, it risks losing its moral compass. Quick-money culture is gradually pushing our young people towards dangerous and questionable practices.”

The statement warned that the desire for instant riches has exposed many youths to illicit activities and harmful spiritual practices, urging mothers to become outspoken advocates against the trend in their homes, churches, markets, workplaces, and community organisations.

Call for Moral Reawakening Among Young Women

APA also appealed to young women to reject lifestyles driven solely by materialism and social validation.

The Assembly observed that the growing obsession with wealthy partners, excessive materialism, and indecent dressing continues to erode the moral fabric of society.

“Character, dignity and self-worth should never be sacrificed on the altar of material gain.”

It encouraged mothers to work alongside fathers in restoring discipline, modesty, and sound moral values among young people.

Building a Stronger, United Anam

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, unity, development, and progress, the Assembly urged every Anam family to support efforts aimed at strengthening community institutions.

The statement specifically encouraged women to persuade their husbands and mature sons who are yet to become members of the Anam People’s Assembly (Worldwide) to register and actively participate in their respective branches across cities, states, and countries.

According to APA, greater participation will strengthen the organisation’s collective voice and enhance unity among Ndi Anam both at home and in the diaspora.
