A wave of grief has swept through Umuimo Community in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State following the tragic discovery of five members of the same family dead inside their residence after they had reportedly not been seen for several days.
The victims, identified as Mr. Kachi Nnabugwu, his wife, Mrs. Chinaza Nnabugwu, and their three children, were found in a decomposing state on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, after concerned neighbours and relatives forced their way into the family’s home.
The heartbreaking discovery came after residents noticed the unusual silence surrounding the household. According to community members, the family was last seen on Saturday, July 18, before their sudden disappearance from public view began to raise alarm.
After repeated attempts to reach the family proved unsuccessful, neighbours reportedly alerted relatives, who visited the residence. Repeated knocks on the door received no response, prompting them to force the door open, where they made the grim discovery.
Sources within the community said containers containing leftover food and a generator set were found inside the house, although authorities have not linked either item to the cause of death.
The bodies were later evacuated from the residence and deposited in a mortuary pending further investigation.
A video circulating on social media also showed community members performing traditional rites around the compound following the shocking incident.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the incident was officially reported to the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters by a relative of the deceased family.
Scene of the Tragic Incident
“Yes, the attention of the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters was drawn to the incident on July 22, 2026, by the brother of the deceased, who reported that after being unable to reach Kachi Nnabugwu, they proceeded to his residence at Umuimo Village in Osisioma Local Government Area,” Chinaka said.
She explained that family members forced their way into the house after repeated knocks went unanswered.
“Upon arrival, repeated knocks yielded no response. They subsequently forced entry into the house, where they discovered the lifeless and decomposing bodies of their brother and his family.”
The police spokesperson disclosed that investigators immediately visited the scene to commence preliminary inquiries.
“The crime scene has been visited. A preliminary visual inspection of the bodies was conducted, and photographs were taken. The corpses have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.”
The police have yet to determine the cause of the deaths, and no official conclusion has been reached regarding what may have led to the tragedy. Authorities said investigations, including autopsy examinations, are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The shocking incident has left residents of Umuimo Community in mourning, with many expressing disbelief over the loss of an entire family under circumstances that remain unclear.
