Governor Chukwuma Soludo and members of the Anambra State House of Assembly on Friday celebrated Nigeria’s Democracy Day by highlighting the gains of democratic governance in the state and assuring residents of greater development projects and legislative reforms in the years ahead.

The occasion, which coincided with the winding-up ceremony and third anniversary of the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly, drew political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, public servants, and citizens from different parts of the state to the Legislative Complex in Awka.

The event, marked with a special Eucharistic service, provided an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, assess the performance of the legislature over the past three years, and renew their commitment to good governance and people-oriented leadership.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Soludo praised the 8th Assembly for what he described as three years of productive legislative service, noting that the cordial relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government has contributed significantly to the progress recorded in the state.

The governor pointed to ongoing infrastructural improvements within the Assembly complex as evidence of democracy delivering tangible benefits to the people, while assuring Ndi Anambra that more developmental projects were on the way.

“I am delighted by the efforts of the House of Assembly over the past three years. Today, one can see the dividends of democracy around this complex, but I can assure you that greater things are still coming,” Soludo said.

“We are moving aggressively towards digitalisation. In the near future, we will establish a digital library within the State House of Assembly. That is what democracy should deliver. That is Solution 2.0 in action.”

He commended lawmakers for their dedication to legislative responsibilities and thanked Ndi Anambra for their continued support of democratic governance in the state.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, attributed the successes recorded by the legislature to the unity, cooperation, and shared vision among members.

According to him, the harmonious relationship within the Assembly has enabled lawmakers to work effectively with both the executive and judicial arms of government in advancing policies and programmes that benefit the people.

Udeze disclosed that the Assembly had passed 17 private member bills into law within three years, describing the achievement as a demonstration of its commitment to responsive and impactful lawmaking.

“The unity and love among members have been our greatest strength. It has enabled us to work closely with the Executive and Judiciary while delivering meaningful legislation for the people of Anambra State,” he said.

“We have successfully passed 17 private member bills into law, and we remain committed to enacting laws that will continue to drive development and improve governance.”

Speaking on the significance of June 12, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, described Democracy Day as a reminder of the power of the people in determining the future of a nation.

He stated that democratic governance has provided Nigerians with the freedom to express themselves and participate in leadership through constitutional means rather than force.

“June 12 represents the voice of the people, and that voice is stronger than arms,” Ofodeme said.

“One of the greatest dividends of democracy is freedom of expression. Democracy has given Nigerians the opportunity to determine their future through dialogue and elections rather than military intervention. That is why democracy remains powerful.”

The Majority Leader also highlighted the Local Government Administration Law as one of the landmark legislations passed by the Assembly, noting that the law has attracted attention from other states seeking to strengthen grassroots governance.

According to him, several states have shown interest in studying the Anambra model because of its effectiveness in promoting local government administration and community development.

“I make bold to say that the Local Government Administration Law remains one of the most impactful laws passed by this Assembly. It empowers the third tier of government and strengthens governance at the grassroots level,” he said.

“The law has attracted national attention, and several states have reached out to study and adapt aspects of the framework.”

Reflecting on the historical significance of June 12, Ofodeme paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices helped pave the way for Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation.

He noted that the struggle for democracy serves as a reminder that freedom, justice, and accountable leadership must never be taken for granted.

The celebration concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and continued progress in Anambra State and Nigeria, as participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and delivering more dividends of democracy to the people.

For many attendees, the event was not only a celebration of past achievements but also a renewed promise that democratic governance would continue to translate into meaningful development and improved living standards for Ndi Anambra.
