The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) Anambra State chapter has commemorated the 2026 World Health Day in Awka, calling for increased investment in healthcare and support for frontline workers.

Speaking during a press briefing, the State Chairman, Mrs. Edith Onwuka stressed that health is not merely the absence of disease but a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, describing it as a fundamental human right.

She noted that the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the state of healthcare in communities, celebrate progress made and renew commitment to building a healthier society. Onwuka highlighted the vital role nurses and midwives play in delivering quality and compassionate care across the state from urban centres to rural communities.

She, however pointed out key challenges affecting the sector, including workforce shortages, increasing disease burden and limited resources, urging government and stakeholders to prioritize investment in healthcare infrastructure, strengthen primary healthcare systems and support frontline health workers.

Onwuka commended the Governor of Anambra State Prof Chukwuma Soludo, for his investments in the health sector and human resource development. She disclosed that the association plans to present him with an international award as the โ€œNursesโ€™ Most Friendly Governorโ€ in recognition of his efforts.

She also praised the Governorโ€™s wife, Nonye Soludo for her advocacy in promoting healthy living.

The association further urged residents to take responsibility for their health by adopting healthy lifestyles, seek timely medical care and support community health initiatives.
