The Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Ikenna Ofodeme, has thrown his weight behind efforts to encourage increased participation in the forthcoming Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Ofodeme, who represents Ekwusigo State Constituency, made the pledge when he received officials of the Anambra State Pilgrim Affairs Office in his office in Awka.

The lawmaker described Christian pilgrimage as a valuable spiritual experience capable of broadening participants’ worldviews, strengthening their spiritual wellbeing and promoting responsible citizenship.

He, however, urged the relevant authorities to fine-tune diplomatic protocols and travel arrangements to facilitate the process, while putting adequate measures in place to prevent pilgrims from absconding.

Speaking during the visit, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Pilgrim Affairs, Mr Odira Ezeh, said the engagement was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the lawmaker in advancing the spiritual, social and developmental objectives of the state government.

Ezeh noted that lawmakers’ engagement with their constituents provides an important platform for promoting initiatives that enhance public welfare and contribute to the overall development of Anambra State.

He reaffirmed the Soludo administration’s commitment to programmes that promote the spiritual, moral, social and economic wellbeing of the people.

The Pilgrim Affairs official also urged Ofodeme to identify and support deserving constituents who wish to embark on pilgrimage but lack the financial resources to participate.

According to him, such assistance would provide beneficiaries with opportunities for spiritual enrichment while demonstrating the government’s commitment to their welfare.

“Christian pilgrimage is one of the avenues through which individuals can experience spiritual renewal, deepen their faith, learn from other cultures and return home with a renewed commitment to their families, communities and the state,” Ezeh said.

He disclosed that the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, had developed initiatives aimed at expanding access to Christian pilgrimage and maximising its benefits for Anambra residents.

Among the initiatives, he said, is the proposed Pilgrimage Exchange Programme, designed to promote religious tourism, attract visitors to Anambra, create employment opportunities and boost the state’s internally generated revenue.

Ezeh also highlighted the proposed Pilgrimage Lottery Programme, which he said would broaden access to pilgrimage opportunities while promoting fairness, transparency and credibility in the selection of beneficiaries.

He further informed the Majority Leader of preparations for the forthcoming Anambra State Christian Pilgrims Summit, describing it as a platform to educate residents on the spiritual significance, purpose and benefits of pilgrimage.

“The summit is intended to deepen public understanding of Christian pilgrimage, encourage responsible participation and strengthen cooperation among the government, church leaders and other strategic stakeholders,” he said.

Ezeh called on Ofodeme and other members of the state legislature to partner with the Pilgrim Affairs Office in raising awareness and encouraging eligible residents to participate in the state’s pilgrimage programme.

He expressed optimism that collaboration with lawmakers would expand participation and ensure that more deserving Anambra residents benefit from the initiative.

The SSA disclosed that airlifting of pilgrims was expected to commence in early November and continue until the last week of December.

He urged interested persons to visit the Anambra State Pilgrim Affairs Office for registration and further information.
