The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered a vehicle allegedly stolen from a 90-year-old retired professor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State.

The recovered vehicle, a blue Toyota Camry, was found at the Old Spare Parts Market, Mgbuka, Obosi, following a distress alert from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) during a routine vehicle registration verification exercise.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, identifying the arrested suspects as Umeh Thankgod, 32, and Sunday Ozor, 24.

According to Ikenga, FRSC personnel in Awka detected irregularities in the vehicle’s registration particulars while conducting verification checks and immediately alerted the police for further investigation.

Acting on the information, operatives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) reportedly tracked the vehicle to the Mgbuka Spare Parts Market in Obosi, where they arrested the two suspects and recovered the car.

Ikenga said preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was allegedly stolen on September 29, 2026, from the residence of the 90-year-old retired professor.

He added that the victim was contacted after the recovery and subsequently identified the vehicle as his property.

“The victim further disclosed that the vehicle was allegedly stolen from his compound with the assistance of his gateman, identified as Bassey Etim, who is currently at large,” Ikenga stated.

The police spokesperson said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gateman and unravel the full circumstances surrounding the theft.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the FRSC personnel for their vigilance and prompt response, describing inter-agency cooperation as critical to effective crime prevention and detection.

According to Ikenga, the police commissioner emphasised that timely information sharing and coordinated operations remain essential to recovering stolen property and safeguarding lives and property.

The police assured that investigations would continue to ensure that all those connected to the alleged theft are brought to justice.
