The member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Udeogalanya Aniekwe, has appealed for calm following renewed tension between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities in Anambra East Local Government Area.

Aniekwe, in a statement issued on Friday, expressed concern over reports of rising tension between the neighbouring communities and urged residents, youths and community leaders to avoid actions capable of escalating the situation.

The federal lawmaker described Aguleri and Umuoba Anam as sister communities with a shared history, stressing that peaceful coexistence was essential to the development and wellbeing of their people.

According to him, “No meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of conflict. Continuous violence will only bring hardship, economic setbacks and destruction to our people.”

Aniekwe called on the traditional rulers, Presidents-General, stakeholders, youth leaders and residents of both communities to sheath their swords and embrace dialogue as the preferred means of resolving the dispute.

He particularly urged both communities to comply with the directives and orders issued by the Mayor of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Sir Ifeanyi Chinweze, as efforts continue to restore peace.

“Our primary focus must be the safety and collective prosperity of our people,” Aniekwe stated.

“I appeal to the traditional rulers, Presidents-General, stakeholders and youth leaders of both communities to sheath their swords and embrace the dialogue mechanisms initiated by the Local Government and State Boundary Committee.

“We must respect the constituted authorities and support the Mayor’s efforts to broker a lasting settlement.”

The lawmaker further urged residents of both communities to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the situation, stressing that peace was in the collective interest of the people.

Aniekwe commended the leadership of Anambra East Local Government Area and security agencies for what he described as their prompt intervention.

He reaffirmed his commitment to working with the local government, state authorities, traditional institutions, community leaders and security agencies to restore lasting peace and harmony to the constituency.

He appealed to all parties involved to prioritise dialogue, mutual understanding and the protection of lives and property as efforts to resolve the dispute continue.
