As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, a former National Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, has called on leaders and citizens to unite in addressing the country’s economic and social challenges.

Okeke-Ogene, who spoke during an Independence Day ceremony in Awka, Anambra State, expressed concern over the rising cost of living, unemployment, declining purchasing power and challenges confronting the education sector.

He also called for the emergence of visionary leadership capable of repositioning the Nigerian economy and restoring confidence in the country.

Recounting his experience of Nigeria’s early independence years, Okeke-Ogene said he witnessed one of the country’s first Independence celebrations in 1964, when he received a plastic cup and a Nigerian flag as gifts.

He, however, lamented what he described as a steady deterioration in the country’s fortunes, particularly the difficulties experienced by people in the South-East since the Nigerian Civil War.

“Nigeria as a whole is marching backwards, given the cost of living, education and other essential needs without commensurate employment opportunities,” he said.

The Ohanaeze chieftain commended Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for what he described as his administration’s developmental strides in the state.

Also speaking, a retired Director in the Federal Civil Service, Lady Dora Ezezika, described Nigeria as an important country with enormous potential but expressed concern over the deterioration in the nation’s socioeconomic conditions.

Ezezika called for urgent improvements in the economy, education and employment opportunities, while urging political leaders to become more responsive to the challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians.

She also appealed to citizens to contribute positively to national development rather than leaving the responsibility entirely to government.

Similarly, the President-General of Abba Town Union, Dr. Roy Chinweuba, advocated the faithful implementation of well-designed government policies and programmes for the benefit of Nigerians.

Chinweuba also called for greater autonomy and effective functioning of the local government system, arguing that grassroots governance remains essential to delivering development directly to the people.

The President-General of Igbariam Progress Union, Mr. Anthony Chiokwe, described the Independence anniversary as an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey, its present challenges and its future direction.

He urged Nigerians to make conscious efforts toward improving the welfare of citizens and called on the people to continue supporting their leaders through constructive engagement and prayers.

The speakers collectively emphasised the need for responsible leadership, citizen participation and practical reforms to address the country’s economic and social challenges as Nigeria enters another year of independence.
