Erosion Crisis: Senator Umeh Inspects Devastated Awka Communities, Pledges Federal Intervention

Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District and candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Dr. Victor Umeh, OFR, has called for urgent federal intervention to tackle the worsening flooding and erosion crisis ravaging communities in the district.

Umeh made the call on Friday during an inspection tour of erosion-affected areas in Umudioka, Awka, where he assessed the extent of damage and expressed solidarity with residents whose homes, roads, farmlands and livelihoods have been severely impacted.

During the inspection, the Senator visited properties belonging to Chief Diamond Nweke, Mr. Okwuchukwu Nweke and retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Chief Celestine Okoye (Uzuakpundu), among others.

The erosion has reportedly destroyed buildings and roads, damaged farmlands and forced some families from their homes, further worsening the hardship faced by residents.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating situation, Senator Umeh pledged to bring the matter before the National Assembly through legislative motions and engagements with the Federal Government and relevant agencies when legislative activities resume after the annual recess.

“This situation requires urgent and coordinated intervention. The scale of the destruction demands the attention of the Federal Government and the relevant agencies responsible for erosion and ecological disaster management,” Umeh said.

He further stressed that the intervention should not be limited to Umudioka, noting that several communities across Anambra Central are facing similar threats from erosion and flooding.

According to him, affected areas in Awka and Idemili North, including Obosi and Ogidi, require sustained attention and practical measures to prevent further destruction of lives and property.

Retired DIG Chief Celestine Okoye commended Senator Umeh for personally visiting the affected communities and assessing the situation firsthand.

Describing the Senator as a compassionate leader who listens to the concerns of his constituents, Okoye expressed optimism that Umeh’s intervention would help attract the attention of the Federal Government and relevant agencies.

“We appreciate Senator Umeh for coming to see the situation for himself. This is a serious problem that requires urgent action. We are hopeful that his intervention will bring the necessary attention to this erosion crisis and help prevent further loss of lives and property,” Okoye said.

The inspection underscores growing calls for coordinated action to address the erosion and flooding challenges threatening communities across Anambra State, particularly areas where environmental degradation continues to damage homes, infrastructure and livelihoods.
