Anambra Community Erupts in Jubilation as Nigerian Navy Unveils Sports Arena for Youths

A landmark Navy intervention in Eziowelle is set to give young people a new platform to play, discover talent and build stronger community ties.

Eziowelle community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State was thrown into jubilation on Tuesday as the Nigerian Navy inaugurated a newly constructed multipurpose outdoor sports arena designed to promote youth development, healthy recreation and community cohesion.

The facility, delivered under the Chief of the Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Project and facilitated by Rear Admiral Emmanuel Anakwe, comprises a multipurpose sports arena, restrooms and changing rooms.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, described the project as a timely intervention capable of providing youths with a suitable environment for sports and social engagement.

Abbas, who was represented by the Chief of Communications and Information Technology, Rear Admiral Semiu Adepegba, said the facility would help reduce youth restiveness and other social vices while contributing to the socio-economic development of the community.

“This project is both timely and impactful. It will provide a suitable sporting and social facility for our youths and, by extension, help reduce youth restiveness and other social vices in the community and its environs,” he said.

The Chief of Naval Staff commended Rear Admiral I. Manda and Rear Admiral Emmanuel Anakwe for identifying a critical community need and effectively utilising funds provided under the Quick Impact Projects Scheme.

He also urged the beneficiaries to protect, maintain and properly utilise the facility to guarantee its sustainability for future generations.

“Leadership is more meaningful when it positively impacts the lives of others,” Abbas said, commending all stakeholders whose cooperation contributed to the successful completion of the project.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to strengthening civil-military relations and supporting initiatives that promote peace, security, social cohesion and national development.

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, also commended the project, describing it as a powerful demonstration that community development cannot be left to government alone.

Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr Patrick-Agha Mba, praised the benefactor for investing in his community and urged other well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture.

“For a distinguished son of the land and a senior officer of the Nigerian Navy to conceive and deliver this facility for his people is highly commendable and worth emulating,” the governor said.

He noted that sports remained a powerful tool for youth engagement, talent discovery, healthy living and community unity.

“This multipurpose arena, with its restrooms and changing rooms, will provide young people in Eziowelle with a fitting environment to train, compete and dream big,” Soludo said.

The governor further reiterated his administration’s call for Ndi Anambra at home and in the diaspora to embrace the “Think Home” philosophy by bringing their ideas, resources and investments back to the state.

According to him, the project demonstrates the impact that individuals can make when they invest in their communities.

“This arena is proof that when you think home, home grows. As the saying goes, charity begins at home,” he added.

The project facilitator, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Anakwe, described the inauguration as a significant milestone in youth empowerment, healthy recreation and community development.

Anakwe said the project reflected the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to effective civil-military cooperation and improving the welfare of communities across the country.

He explained that the Chief of Naval Staff’s Quick Impact Projects were conceived to provide critical infrastructure in communities, strengthen the relationship between the Navy and citizens, and project the service positively within society.

According to him, the initiative also aligns with the Chief of Naval Staff’s philosophy of promoting personnel welfare and harnessing opportunities to make meaningful contributions to host communities.

But beyond the sporting facility, the project carries a deeply personal significance for Anakwe.

He revealed that the arena was constructed in loving memory of his late father, Rear Commander Emmanuel Chukuma Anakwe, a former Nigerian Navy captain and footballer who represented and captained Nigeria’s national team, the Red Devils, between 1956 and 1958.

Anakwe said his late father lived by three core values: service to country, commitment to community and love for the game.

“He taught us that leadership is service, that talent was to be given back, and that the fuel to your character is built,” Anakwe said.

Reflecting on his father’s legacy, he added:

“He is no longer here with us in body, but his spirit is here. The spirit of discipline, teamwork and love for Nigerian lives. It all lives on. This arena is my way to say thank you, Daddy. Thank you for the values. Thank you for the example.”

The inauguration brought together senior military officers, state government representatives, local government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders, underscoring the growing importance of partnerships between institutions and communities in driving grassroots development.

With the new facility now open, residents of Eziowelle and neighbouring communities have gained a new space for sports, recreation, talent development and social interaction—turning a community intervention into a lasting legacy of service.
