Police Arrest Two Suspected Drug Dealers in Anambra, Recover N6.2m Drugs, N598,400 Cash

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested two suspected illicit drug dealers and recovered substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, methamphetamine and other illicit drugs valued at N6.2 million, alongside N598,400 cash.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at a suspected criminal hideout in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The operation was carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following credible intelligence on the alleged activities of suspected illicit drug dealers operating in the area.

The suspects were identified by the police as 47-year-old Nzube Onyedikachukwu, popularly known as “Onyeoma,” and 20-year-old Ugochukwu Azia.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, a search of the hideout led to the recovery of a large quantity of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, methamphetamine and other illicit drugs.

The recovered substances were estimated by the police to be worth N6.2 million, while N598,400 in cash was also recovered from the location.

Police intensify crackdown

The operation is part of intensified security operations by the command following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on sustained intelligence-led operations and the dismantling of criminal hideouts across the country.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has consequently directed operatives to step up targeted operations against criminal elements and their suspected operational bases across the state.

The police said preliminary investigations indicated that the two suspects were allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit drugs and that the location had been used as a meeting point by suspected criminal elements after carrying out their operations.

According to the statement, some of the suspected criminals fled the location after sighting the police during the raid.

Investigation ongoing

The two suspects are currently in police custody as investigators work to establish the source of the suspected illicit drugs and trace their alleged distribution network.

The police said the investigation would also seek to identify other persons allegedly connected to the operation and determine the circumstances surrounding the cash recovered from the hideout.

The Commissioner of Police vowed that the command would sustain intelligence-led raids, targeted operations and proactive policing to dismantle criminal hideouts and prevent criminals from establishing safe havens in the state.

CP Nnanna Oji Ama also called on residents, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the police by providing credible and timely information about suspicious persons, criminal activities and suspected criminal hideouts.

He assured residents that such intelligence would assist the command in preventing crime and strengthening security across the state.
