Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming that he advised Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 elections.
Obi described the report as false and misleading, saying he has profound respect for members of the nationโs armed forces and has consistently advocated better welfare and working conditions for security personnel.
The former Anambra State governor made his position known in a statement issued to clarify what he described as a misrepresentation of his views.
He said Nigerian soldiers continue to serve the country under difficult and dangerous circumstances and deserve adequate equipment, motivation, protection and improved welfare.
Obi recalled his previous reaction to the death of soldiers following a delayed rescue operation, questioning why personnel deployed to defend the country could be left vulnerable when they needed assistance.
He said his concerns about the welfare and safety of military personnel had been demonstrated on several occasions.
The NDC candidate also pledged to prioritise the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of members of the armed forces if elected President.
โThose who ensure Nigeriaโs security must never be relegated to a secondary concern,โ Obi said.
He added that soldiers deserved the โutmost respect, support and a government that will stand firmly behind them.โ
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard the report, insisting that it did not reflect his position on the welfare of military personnel.
He further reaffirmed his commitment to what he described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
The controversy comes amid continuing public debate over the remuneration, welfare and operational conditions of Nigerian military personnel involved in counter-insurgency and other security operations across the country.
