New Anambra Police Commissioner, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, Takes Charge, Vows Tougher Fight Against Crime

The Anambra State Police Command has a new Commissioner of Police. CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, has officially assumed duty as the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, with a pledge to strengthen security, deepen community policing and intensify the fight against crime.

The new police boss assumed office on Monday, August 10, 2026, following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.

CP Oji Ama arrives in Anambra with more than 30 years of policing experience, having served in key intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration and strategic command positions.

Before his deployment to Anambra, he was Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had earlier served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.

Who is CP Nnanna Oji Ama?

A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, CP Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos. He began his police career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.

His career has taken him through several sensitive operational and command positions, including:

• Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja
• Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State

• Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command

He has also undergone several advanced professional and strategic training programmes in Nigeria and abroad.

These include the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at NIPSS, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.

Commended for Gallantry

The new Anambra Commissioner has also been recognised for professional courage and operational effectiveness.

In 2007, he received a commendation for “uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry” following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.

New CP: “We Will Consolidate Security Gains”

Upon assuming office, CP Oji Ama pledged to consolidate the security gains already recorded in Anambra while building stronger partnerships with communities and other security stakeholders.

He specifically highlighted collaboration with other security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders as central to his policing strategy.

The Commissioner assured residents, visitors and businesses across the state that the Command would intensify efforts to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, and uphold the rule of law.

“Our commitment is to consolidate the existing security gains in Anambra State and strengthen collaboration with all critical stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of the people.”

He further assured the people of Anambra that the Police Command would remain focused on creating a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and businesses.
