Anambra Traditional Rulers Council Moves to Resolve Ideani Leadership Crisis, Begins Hearing on Petition

The Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ASTRC) has commenced hearing on a petition arising from the leadership dispute in Ideani community, Idemili North Local Government Area, in a move aimed at restoring peace, strengthening traditional institutions and promoting harmonious community governance.

The hearing, conducted by the ASTRC Conflict Resolution Committee in collaboration with members of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC), marks the beginning of efforts to amicably resolve the lingering disagreement between the traditional institution and the leadership of the Ideani Development Union.

The petition, filed by the traditional ruler of Ideani, HRM Igwe Steve Ezeji, is against the President-General of the Ideani Development Union, Engr. Paul Okoye, and some members of the town union over allegations that their actions undermined the traditional institution and threatened peace and stability within the community.

Among the allegations contained in the petition are claims that the President-General established a parallel leadership structure allegedly contrary to the authority of the traditional ruler, violated provisions of the Ideani community constitution, defamed the monarch, and engaged in actions capable of causing a breach of peace.

The petition also alleges the creation of an atmosphere of anarchy, conspiracy to weaken the traditional institution, and abuse of office, among other claims. The allegations remain subjects of the committee’s ongoing deliberations.

Speaking during the hearing held on July 21 at the ASTUC Hall, Old Government House, Awka, Chairman of the Conflict Resolution Committee, Igwe C. N. Okpala of Awkaeze, said the intervention underscores the Council’s commitment to resolving communal disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.

“This committee was established to provide a peaceful and credible platform for resolving intra- and inter-community disputes. Our objective is to foster reconciliation, strengthen community leadership structures and restore lasting peace, unity and stability across Anambra communities,” Igwe Okpala stated.

The committee, however, adjourned proceedings after some members of the Ideani Town Union were unavailable to appear before it. A new date for the continuation of the hearing will be communicated to all parties.

The hearing was attended by several members of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, including Igwe P. N. Ezeamama, Igwe Simeon Chidubem, Igwe Emmanuel C. Nnabuife, Igwe Chika S. Uchime, Igwe Simon I. Okafor, Igwe Sylvanus Iloh, and the Secretary-General of the Council, Igwe C. C. Agbala.

Also present were the traditional ruler of Ideani, HRM Igwe Steve Ezeji, accompanied by members of his cabinet; the representative of the ASTUC Chairman, Mr. Tony Ezenwaka; the President-General of the Ideani Development Union, Engr. Paul Okoye; the Union’s Secretary-General, Mr. Nnaji Uwaezuoke; the ASTRC Administrative Secretary, Mr. Donatus Orjika, and other stakeholders.

The Traditional Rulers Council reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, emphasizing that dialogue remains the most effective pathway to preserving unity, safeguarding traditional institutions and ensuring sustainable development across communities in Anambra State.
