The Nigerian Army has disclosed details of the intelligence-driven operation that led to the successful rescue of 44 pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State, revealing that the mission involved weeks of coordinated surveillance, arrests and sustained pressure on the kidnappers before the victims regained their freedom.

The pupils and their teachers were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, throwing families and the nation into anxiety. After more than seven weeks in captivity, they were rescued alive on Friday, July 10, following a joint security operation led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife.

According to a statement issued by the Army, the operation brought together several of Nigeria’s top security and intelligence agencies in what officials described as a carefully coordinated mission aimed at rescuing the victims without endangering their lives.

The operation involved the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) through the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Defence Headquarters, Special Forces from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force, as well as the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies.

According to the Army, the operation lasted for more than one month and focused not only on locating the victims but also dismantling the criminal network responsible for the abduction.

“The operations focused on identifying the terrorist kingpins that masterminded the kidnapping, bursting and dismantling their networks and logistics links, including their informants and hideouts located within the Old Oyo National Park Forest,” the Army stated.

Security operatives reportedly carried out multiple arrests within Oyo State and in several other parts of the country, targeting suspected collaborators, informants and members of the criminal syndicate.

The Army explained that the sustained offensive significantly weakened the kidnappers’ operational capacity, leaving them with little choice but to release their captives.

“These arrests completely disorganized the group, exerted overwhelming pressure on them and ultimately led the terrorist group to unconditionally release the pupils and teachers,” the statement added.

Military authorities stressed that the rescue mission was meticulously planned to ensure the safety of the children and their teachers while minimising the risk of civilian casualties.

“The operations were carefully planned and executed to avoid collateral damage and to ensure that the innocent children and teachers were safely rescued.”

However, the Army disclosed that the mission came at a cost, confirming that some security personnel sustained casualties during the operation. “There were some casualties on the part of the security forces,” the statement noted, without providing further details.

The rescued pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical evaluation and treatment at an undisclosed hospital before being handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families.

The successful operation has drawn widespread commendation from Nigerians, with many praising the resilience and professionalism of the security agencies involved.

One resident of Ibadan, reacting to the development, said: “This is the kind of news every parent has been praying for. We thank the security agencies for bringing these children home safely.”

A security analyst also described the operation as evidence that intelligence-led collaboration among security agencies remains one of the most effective strategies against kidnapping and terrorism.

“This operation demonstrates the value of inter-agency cooperation. Rather than rushing into a high-risk assault, the security agencies systematically dismantled the kidnappers’ network until they had no option but to release the victims.”

The rescue is expected to boost public confidence in ongoing efforts by Nigerian security agencies to combat kidnapping and violent crime across the country.
