Dr. Gabriel Chy Alonta of the Department of Business Education, Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has been honoured as the Best Male Lecturer of the Year by students of the Association of Vocational and Technology Education Students (AVOCEDS).

The prestigious recognition, which was announced during the Association’s maiden Award and Dinner Night held on June 27, 2026, followed a student voting process that celebrated lecturers who have distinguished themselves in teaching, mentorship and service. Dr. Alonta emerged winner after securing the highest number of votes cast by students of the Faculty.

Although he was unable to attend the award ceremony due to an official engagement, the award plaque was formally presented to him on July 8, 2026, in his office by the President of AVOCEDS, Comrade Paul Chinedu Okoli, alongside the Association’s Director of Socials, Onyedikachi Wisdom Chukwudi.

Reacting to the honour, Dr. Alonta described the recognition as one of the most fulfilling moments of his academic career, noting that an award from students carries a unique significance.

“There are few honours more meaningful to a teacher than one bestowed by the very students he is privileged to teach. I am deeply honoured and sincerely grateful for this recognition. It is both humbling and inspiring,” he said.

He dedicated the award to the students of the Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education for their confidence and support.

“I dedicate this award to every student who considered me worthy of their nomination and votes. Your appreciation reminds me that every lecture delivered, every assignment marked and every word of encouragement truly matters. This recognition will inspire me to continue shaping lives through teaching and mentorship.”

Dr. Alonta also paid tribute to his colleagues, describing the award as a collective achievement for lecturers committed to academic excellence and character development.

“This honour belongs not only to me but also to my colleagues, with whom I share the responsibility of producing graduates who are academically sound, professionally competent and morally upright. Together, we remain committed to transforming lives through education.”

He further commended the leadership of AVOCEDS for instituting an award that promotes excellence and strengthens the relationship between students and lecturers.

“Recognising excellence among lecturers is a commendable initiative. It encourages greater dedication to quality teaching while fostering mutual respect and stronger collaboration between students and their teachers.”

Reflecting on his academic journey, Dr. Alonta noted that the latest recognition holds a special place in his heart because it came directly from those he teaches.

He recalled receiving the Vice-Chancellor’s Award as the Best Academic Staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2023, describing the students’ award as a powerful affirmation of his commitment to teaching and mentorship.

“Receiving recognition from my students is particularly special because it reflects the voices of those whose lives and futures remain the very essence of my calling as a teacher. I am sincerely grateful for their trust.”

The award is widely seen as a testament to Dr. Alonta’s dedication to academic excellence, impactful teaching, student mentorship and outstanding service within the university community.
