Commercial motorcyclists plying within
school gate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state and its environs have protested incessant harassment by security operatives, including a vigilante group, positioned around the area.

The protesters also alleged daily taxation by certain individuals claiming to be working for the state government without proper identification of their office.

The cyclists who also play some parts of Amansea and Ebenebe said the unwholesome attitude had earlier led to shooting of one of their members by the vigilante security.

Speaking during a peace meeting between the cyclists, their executives and President General of non-Indigenes In the State, Prince Chigozie Nweke, a member of the Elders Council of Non-Indigenes, Dr. Daniel Balami said the constant harassment, intimidation and payment of taxes to unidentified persons had terribly affected their operations.

According to him, a lasting solution must be explored to avoid further escalation of the situation to restore peace and harmony amongst all.

Responding, President General of Non-Indigenes in the State, Prince Chigozie Nweke sued for calm, assuring them that the grievances and concerns raised would be looked into in a bid to bring lasting peace to the area.

He also assured that the group would never shield criminals who ferment trouble in the state.

Appreciating Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his all inclusive leadership which had allowed non-Indigenes to benefit from government policies, Nweke urged his members to take advantage of the free education as well as antenatal and delivery services offered by state government for their children and wives.
