The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Anambra State Secretariat, has provided free medical services to over 120 residents of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area as part of its third-quarter Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).

The medical outreach, held at Ogidi Town Hall, offered residents free medical consultations, diagnostic tests and medications, with particular attention to individuals who might struggle to afford essential healthcare services.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, reaffirmed the Scheme’s commitment to community development and improving access to basic healthcare in rural and underserved communities.

Ojisua explained that the HIRD programme was designed to bring essential medical services closer to residents, enabling them to receive medical attention without the immediate financial burden of consultation fees, diagnostic tests and prescribed medications.

She also emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare and early medical assessment in promoting healthier communities and improving residents’ overall well-being.

According to her, the initiative demonstrates how community-focused interventions can complement existing healthcare services and provide practical support to vulnerable populations.

“Through this initiative, NYSC Anambra continues to demonstrate its commitment to community service, social responsibility and improving access to essential healthcare for residents of our host communities,” she said.

She added that the programme reinforces the Scheme’s dedication to initiatives that directly improve the welfare and quality of life of people at the grassroots.

The traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom, Igwe (Pharm.) Alex Uzo Onyido, pledged the support of the community’s leadership for initiatives aimed at promoting public health and improving residents’ welfare.

He underscored the importance of collaboration between community leaders and organisations in advancing healthcare delivery and ensuring that residents benefit from interventions designed to address their needs.

Also present at the event were the President-General of Ogidi Union Nigeria, Mr Chijioke Ewesiobi, and the Secretary-General, Dr Emeka Muoemenam.

The outreach forms part of NYSC’s broader community development efforts to extend essential healthcare services to underserved populations and promote healthier communities across Anambra State.
