Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged the Federal Government to move beyond ceremonial tributes and demonstrate genuine commitment to the welfare of serving and retired military personnel.
Obi said the nation’s appreciation for those who defend its territorial integrity must translate into better living conditions, improved healthcare, timely pensions and adequate support for their families.
He made the call in a message marking the burial of retired Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor in Awka, Anambra State, against the backdrop of a difficult period for the Nigerian Army following reported losses of military personnel in an aircraft crash and another helicopter crash.
Describing the incidents as painful reminders of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, Obi stressed that the country must do more to protect and support those who risk their lives in the service of the nation.
According to him, retired military personnel deserve timely payment of pensions, accessible medical care, decent housing and the necessary support to enjoy their retirement in dignity and peace.
He also emphasised that the families of military personnel must not be left to bear the consequences of their loved ones’ sacrifices without adequate assistance from the government.
“Patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and tributes. It must be reflected in the practical care we provide for those who serve and those who have served,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor further called for urgent attention to the welfare of serving military personnel, stressing the need for adequate operational equipment, quality training, effective medical services and other essential resources to enable them to perform their duties safely and effectively.

He maintained that the responsibility of defending the country should be matched by a corresponding commitment from the government to protect the lives, dignity and well-being of those entrusted with that duty.
Obi added that military personnel who put their lives on the line for Nigeria deserve a country that recognises their sacrifices through concrete policies and sustained support rather than words of appreciation alone.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of General Obiakor’s soul, asking God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss and provide divine protection for serving members of the armed forces.
He also extended his condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty, urging that their sacrifices be remembered through meaningful action and lasting support.
