The newly inaugurated Mayor of Anambra West Local Government Area, Dr. Tony Obierike, has formally assumed office, beginning his administration with a Holy Mass at the council secretariat in Nzam.
The ceremony, which marked the official commencement of Obierike’s tenure, attracted religious leaders, political stakeholders, community leaders, council officials, members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other residents of Anambra West.
Delivering the homily during the Holy Eucharistic celebration, Most Rev. Fr. Pro. Okakpu urged leaders to anchor their service to God and remain committed to the welfare of the people entrusted to their care.
He noted that leadership comes with a responsibility to serve humanity and encouraged public office holders to emulate the example of Saint Paul by making service, compassion and the well-being of others central to their leadership.

“Leaders must always remember that leadership is a service to humanity. Let your service be guided by God and by the responsibility to be your brother’s keeper,” he admonished.
The cleric also urged the new administration to pursue peace, justice and unity while ensuring that its policies and programmes positively impact the people.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Jacob Udoba called on the people of Anambra West, particularly members of APGA, to give the new mayor maximum support as he settles into office.
Udoba described Obierike’s emergence as an opportunity for the people to work together towards the development of the local government, urging stakeholders to put aside differences and support initiatives that would benefit the communities.
He also advised the mayor to be magnanimous in victory and ensure that his administration carried everyone along, regardless of political affiliation or previous differences.
“You are now the leader of the entire people of Anambra West. Carry everyone along, be magnanimous in victory and give every citizen a sense of belonging,” Udoba said.
He further urged the mayor to use his position to promote unity, development and inclusive governance across the local government area.
In his response, Dr. Tony Obierike expressed profound gratitude to everyone who attended the ceremony and supported the commencement of his administration.
The mayor particularly appreciated the Catholic priests and other clergy members who participated in the Holy Mass and offered prayers and blessings for his administration.
Obierike thanked the people of Anambra West for their confidence and pledged to approach his responsibilities with humility, dedication and a strong commitment to the development of the local government.
The ceremony ended with prayers and goodwill messages for the new administration, with participants expressing optimism that the new leadership would promote peace, unity and grassroots development across Anambra West.
