Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, has appealed to the people of Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State to end hostilities and embrace dialogue in resolving their differences.

Obi, reacting to reports of conflict between the two neighbouring communities, expressed concern over the situation and warned that violence would only deepen the hardship faced by residents.

“I am deeply pained by the reports of hostilities between the good people of Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri in Anambra East LGA of Anambra State,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate noted that conflicts between communities often result in the destruction of lives, homes and livelihoods, adding that such consequences would further burden families already struggling with economic difficulties.

“Hostilities of the kind we are witnessing between the two communities achieve nothing but destruction,” he said.

According to Obi, the prevailing economic challenges make it particularly important for communities to avoid actions that could worsen the suffering of their people.

“At a time when people are already finding it increasingly difficult to survive, adding the devastation of conflict is like adding fuel to the fire,” he said.

The former governor appealed to the leadership and residents of both communities to immediately cease hostilities and pursue peaceful avenues for resolving their grievances.

“No grievance, however serious, is worth the loss of lives, the destruction of homes and livelihoods, or the pain inflicted on families,” Obi said.

He urged the people of Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam to embrace dialogue and reconciliation rather than revenge, stressing that disagreements could be resolved without resorting to violence.

“Let us choose dialogue over violence, reconciliation over revenge, and peace over destruction. There is always a better way to resolve our differences,” he appealed.

Obi also called for wisdom among community leaders and stakeholders as efforts are made to restore peace and rebuild trust between the two communities.

“May God grant wisdom to our leaders and peace to Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri,” he said.

He ended his appeal on an optimistic note, declaring: “Nigeria will be OK.”
