Devastating Erosion: Obosi Residents Cry Out, Seek Urgent Anambra Government Solution

Residents of Oduke community in Ugwuagba, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, have raised the alarm over a devastating erosion menace that is threatening lives, homes, public infrastructure and economic activities in the area.

The residents are appealing for urgent intervention by the Anambra State Government and other relevant authorities before the situation deteriorates further.

The erosion has already completely cut off the road linking Awada and Electrical in Obosi, creating serious mobility challenges for residents and disrupting access to schools, markets, healthcare facilities and other essential services. Business activities within the affected area have also been severely impacted.

The Chairman of Ugwuagba Obosi Landlord Association, Mr. Chiemelie Nduka, and the association’s Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Machebe, told newsmen that the erosion problem began after the road was graded and subsequently abandoned during the previous administration.

According to them, the community has made several attempts to contain the expanding gully through self-help efforts, including the construction of culverts and drainage channels, but the erosion has continued to worsen.

“We have made efforts as residents to control the situation, but the magnitude of the erosion has gone beyond what the community can handle,” they said.

They appealed to both the Anambra State and Federal Governments to urgently intervene, warning that further delay could lead to more extensive damage to residential buildings, roads and other critical infrastructure.

Reacting to the situation, the Acting Managing Director of the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed and Climate Change Agency (ANSEWCCA), Engr. Ifeanyi Nwasinoke, called on residents to cooperate and join hands in efforts aimed at controlling the erosion menace.

According to him, “an injury to one should concern all,” stressing that collective responsibility is necessary to prevent the disaster from escalating.

Engr. Nwasinoke also cautioned residents against dumping refuse into drainage channels and erosion sites, warning that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes significantly to blocked waterways and worsening erosion.

The affected residents, however, maintain that while community cooperation remains important, the scale of the devastation requires urgent and comprehensive government intervention to protect lives, properties and vital infrastructure in Ugwuagba, Obosi.
