Tinubu Orders Immediate Intervention as Umahi Moves to Restore Benin–Agbor–Asaba

The Federal Government has ordered immediate intervention on the deteriorating Benin–Agbor–Asaba and Ifaki–Kabba–Ado Ekiti road corridors, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to urgently ease the hardship faced by stranded motorists and commuters.

The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, has consequently mobilised officials and key stakeholders for emergency remedial measures aimed at restoring movement on the affected routes while longer-term solutions are pursued.

The directive follows growing concerns over the deplorable condition of the roads, where motorists and commuters have reportedly spent several hours — and in some cases days — navigating severe traffic congestion and difficult road conditions.

“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi said.

In response, the Minister directed the Minister of State for Works to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki–Kabba–Ado Ekiti axis across Ekiti and Kogi States to assess the situation and commence urgent remedial works.

The intervention was already underway as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, with officials of the Ministry deployed to the affected areas.

While the intervention team moved into Ekiti and Kogi States, Umahi personally travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees, to coordinate a similar emergency response on the strategic Benin–Agbor–Asaba corridor.

A stakeholders’ meeting in Benin is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The meeting is aimed at identifying immediate measures to address the challenges confronting motorists and commuters along the corridor.

Umahi also accepted responsibility for the difficulties currently being experienced by road users and apologised to commuters who have been stranded or subjected to prolonged delays.

The Minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government’s intervention would not be limited to temporary relief, stressing that emergency measures would be implemented alongside efforts to deliver permanent solutions and improve the long-term reliability of the affected roads.

The Federal Ministry of Works said the coordinated interventions are intended to restore mobility on the critical corridors and reduce the hardship currently being experienced by road users.
