A major disaster was narrowly averted in Awka, Anambra State, after firefighters swiftly responded to a fully loaded petroleum tanker that overturned and spilled its contents along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.

The incident occurred on Sunday night at Agu Awka Junction, beside the Revenue Office, where the tanker was involved in a road accident and overturned, damaging parts of the vehicle and spilling its contents onto the roadway.

The prompt intervention of officers of the Anambra State Fire Service prevented a possible fire outbreak or explosion, particularly given the highly hazardous nature of the spilled petroleum product.

The State Fire Chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, disclosed this on Monday, saying the Fire Service received a distress call at about 10:30 p.m. reporting the accident.

According to Chiketa, firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene to assess the situation, secure the area and prevent any secondary disaster.

“Fire service crew were immediately deployed to the scene to assess the situation, secure the area and prevent any possible fire outbreak or secondary hazard arising from the incident,” he said.

He explained that upon arrival, firefighters found the tanker overturned following the accident, with some parts of the vehicle damaged and its contents already spilling onto the road.

“However, there was no fire outbreak,” Chiketa said, adding that no casualties or injuries were recorded.

He noted that the exact carrying capacity of the tanker could not be immediately ascertained at the scene.

Chiketa said firefighters took necessary safety measures to contain the situation and minimise the risk of ignition, given the presence of spilled petroleum products.

“The responding fire service crew secured the area and took necessary safety measures to control the situation and prevent a possible fire outbreak, particularly given the hazardous nature of the spilled contents,” he said.

The situation was brought under control, while the accident scene remained secured until the firefighters withdrew at about 11:45 p.m.

The Fire Chief urged motorists and residents to exercise extreme caution when approaching accident scenes involving fuel tankers and other vehicles transporting hazardous materials.

He also advised members of the public to immediately alert the Fire Service whenever they encounter emergencies capable of resulting in fire, explosion or other secondary hazards.

The incident once again highlights the potentially catastrophic consequences of tanker accidents, particularly on busy highways, where spilled petroleum products can quickly become a major fire or explosion risk.

Fortunately, the swift response of the Anambra State Fire Service ensured that the tanker accident did not escalate into a larger disaster.
