UNIZIK Orders Probe Into Alleged Sexual Misconduct, Condemns Attack on Lecturer

Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has ordered an immediate investigation into an alleged sexual misconduct involving a female student and a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts.

The directive followed an incident on Saturday, August 15, 2026, in which the lecturer was reportedly physically assaulted and attacked amid the allegation. Videos of the incident have since circulated widely on social media.

In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, the university described the development as unfortunate and condemned the use of violence or self-help in addressing allegations of misconduct.

“Management is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident and strongly condemns the resort to violence, self-help, or any form of jungle justice under any circumstance,” Attah said.

The university, however, reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on sexual misconduct, harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviour.

According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has consistently maintained the institution’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for both students and staff.

“At the same time, Management emphasises that allegations of misconduct must be handled through established institutional procedures and due process. No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment,” the statement added.

Given the seriousness of the allegation and the circumstances surrounding the incident, Management has directed that an “immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation” be conducted to establish what transpired.

The university said appropriate administrative processes have already been activated and that the matter remains under review to ensure that justice is served fairly and objectively to all parties.

“UNIZIK remains firmly committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of its staff and students and will continue to take decisive action against any conduct that violates these principles,” the statement said.

Management added that further developments and official pronouncements on the matter would be communicated in due course.
