Friends Mourn Young Couple Who Perished in Amaokpala Hostel Collapse

What was meant to be an ordinary late-night visit ended in an unimaginable tragedy. Two young graduates with dreams of building a better future have been confirmed dead after the devastating collapse of the Elite 5 Star Hostel in Amaokpala, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State.

The victims, identified as Vivian Chinedum and her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Stanley, were among those trapped when the hostel building reportedly collapsed on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2026.

The hostel, said to house about 60 rooms, came crashing down with several occupants still inside, triggering frantic rescue efforts that continued into the following days.

Vivian and Ifeanyi, both alumni of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, were widely described by friends and acquaintances as hardworking, determined young entrepreneurs. Vivian reportedly ran a baking business, while Ifeanyi, popularly known as “Don Cash,” worked as a Moniepoint PoS machine distributor.

According to sources familiar with the incident, Ifeanyi had visited Vivian at the hostel at about 10:45 p.m. that night. The visit, expected to be routine, became their final moments together before the building gave way.

Reacting to the heartbreaking loss, a close friend, Ganobi Precious Ifeanyichukwu, paid an emotional tribute to the couple.

“Vivian and Ifeanyi were hardworking, ambitious and full of hope. They were building their future together, but their dreams were cut short in the most painful way. Their deaths are a heartbreaking loss to everyone who knew them.”

News of their deaths has sparked widespread grief across social media, with friends, former classmates, colleagues and well-wishers expressing shock and mourning the promising lives lost in the disaster.

The tragedy has also reignited public concerns over building safety and regulatory compliance in Anambra State. Many residents and stakeholders are calling on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse and ensure that those found responsible are held accountable.

As families mourn and survivors continue to recover from the traumatic incident, the disaster serves as another painful reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building standards to prevent similar tragedies.
