Amaokpala Hostel Collapse: Anambra Orders Integrity Tests for Commercial Buildings, Warns Unsafe Structures Will Be Demolished

The Anambra State Government has ordered comprehensive structural integrity tests for all commercial buildings in Amaokpala and Oko communities in Orumba North Local Government Area following the devastating collapse of a three-storey hostel in Amaokpala that reportedly claimed several lives.

The announcement came on Sunday, July 27, as the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, addressed journalists at the scene of the tragedy, declaring that the state would take decisive action to prevent a recurrence.

Describing the incident as a wake-up call, Ojukwu said preliminary investigations revealed structural defects in the collapsed building. He noted that the area has witnessed multiple cases of building failures in recent years, making immediate structural assessments imperative.

“Once the owner noticed structural defects, the proper step should have been to notify the relevant authorities for an integrity test,” the commissioner stated.

As part of the government’s response, Ojukwu announced that every commercial building in Amaokpala and Oko would undergo mandatory structural integrity tests at the owners’ expense. He warned that any structure found to be unsafe would be demolished to protect lives and property.

“Public safety is non-negotiable. Buildings that fail integrity assessments will not be allowed to remain standing,” he stressed.

The commissioner also disclosed a new policy under which the state government would acquire any land where a building collapse occurs, describing it as part of broader efforts to strengthen compliance with physical planning regulations and discourage negligence in the construction sector.

He urged developers, landlords and property owners to strictly adhere to approved building standards and promptly report visible structural defects for professional assessment before they escalate into disasters.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing building regulations, strengthening oversight, and ensuring that avoidable structural failures are prevented across Anambra State.
