Nigeria Makes History! Students Win Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China

From their classrooms in Nigeria to the world stage in Shanghai, four exceptional students have written their names in history by securing Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal at the prestigious Spelling Bee World Cup.

Nigeria has recorded a historic milestone in global academic competition as Team Nigeria clinched the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.

The victorious team comprised Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf, who qualified to represent Nigeria after outstanding performances at the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.

In addition to the team’s remarkable triumph, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf, both students of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, earned individual medals, further cementing Nigeria’s impressive outing at the global competition.

“This victory is more than a gold medal—it’s proof that Nigerian students can compete with and outperform the very best in the world,” supporters of the team said while celebrating the achievement.

Making the feat even more remarkable, this was Nigeria’s maiden appearance at the Spelling Bee World Cup. Despite competing against some of the brightest young spellers from across the globe, the Nigerian team emerged champions, bringing home the coveted gold medal.
