Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has immortalised Nigeria’s foremost literary icon, the late Professor Chinua Achebe, with the commissioning of a magnificent statue in his hometown of Ogidi, declaring that the celebrated novelist remains “an enduring symbol of excellence, authenticity, courage and timeless values.”

The statue, unveiled on Friday at the Ugwu Nwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, drew government officials, traditional rulers, academics, literary enthusiasts and admirers from across the country in a fitting tribute to the globally acclaimed author of Things Fall Apart.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Soludo said the monument is far more than a physical structure, describing it as a lasting reminder of the ideals Professor Achebe lived and championed throughout his lifetime.

“This statue is not merely a monument. It is a powerful symbol of excellence, authenticity, courage and the timeless values that Professor Chinua Achebe stood for. It is a message to this generation and those yet unborn that greatness is achieved through character, vision and service,” the governor said.

Soludo described Achebe as “Ogidi’s gift to the world and Anambra State’s enduring pride,” noting that the literary icon’s works continue to shape global conversations on African identity, culture, leadership, justice and the human condition.

According to the governor, preserving the legacies of exceptional sons and daughters of Anambra remains a priority of his administration, as their achievements continue to inspire excellence and project the state’s rich heritage to the world.

“Professor Achebe’s legacy transcends literature. His life reminds us that ideas can transform societies and that excellence leaves footprints that generations will follow,” Soludo added.

He called on young Nigerians to emulate Achebe’s exemplary life of discipline, scholarship, creativity, integrity and patriotism, stressing that lasting success is built on hard work, knowledge and selfless service to humanity.

The unveiling of the statue, accompanied by prayers and goodwill messages, marked another significant milestone in preserving the legacy of one of Africa’s most celebrated writers and reaffirmed Anambra State’s commitment to honouring individuals whose accomplishments have elevated the state’s global reputation.

Professor Chinua Achebe, whose groundbreaking novel Things Fall Apart remains one of the most widely read books in African literature, is celebrated worldwide for reshaping global perceptions of African history, identity and storytelling. The newly commissioned monument now stands as a permanent symbol of his enduring influence and Anambra’s pride in one of its greatest sons.
