In a landmark judgment that has sent shockwaves through the community, an Anambra High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the horrific rape and murder of a vulnerable teenager, a crime the judge described as “a desecration of societal values.”

The Ogidi High Court delivered the ultimate penalty on Friday to Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu, convicting them of conspiracy, rape, and the murder of 17-year-old Jennifer Anene, a mentally-impaired girl whose tragic death in November 2020 sparked outrage across the state.

Presiding Judge U.I. Ndigwe ruled that the prosecution had proven the three-count charge against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. The court heard how the teenager, who was reportedly battling mental illness, was reported missing by her grandfather, Pius Anene, on November 25, 2020.

A Trail of Evidence

In a chilling turn of events, the prosecution revealed that three days after Jennifer’s disappearance, the first defendant’s wife came forward with devastating testimony. She told the family she had witnessed her husband and others sexually assaulting the young girl as she screamed for help .

Principal State Counsel Florence Abadom-Igweike told the court that when confronted, Belonwu denied the allegations and claimed he had last seen the victim in the company of the second defendant .

The court further heard that a mutual friend of the defendants, identified only as “Akpuchukwu,” brought the unconscious teenager home and fled the scene. He remains at large .

Jennifer was rushed to the hospital on police instruction but was tragically pronounced dead on arrival. A post-mortem examination confirmed the worst fears, revealing extensive bruises, vaginal tears, and other signs of aggravated sexual assault .

A Wife’s Courage and a Family’s Pain

In a striking act of conscience, the first defendant’s wife risked everything to testify against her husband, despite being served with a court summons, though she ultimately declined to appear in court . Her initial report to the victim’s family was instrumental in unraveling the crime.

The prosecution presented a compelling case, calling the victim’s grandfather and the Investigating Police Officer as witnesses, alongside a post-mortem report and photographic evidence .

Final Judgment

The defendants, who testified in their own defense, denied all allegations. However, Justice Ndigwe was unconvinced, stating that the evidence before the court established their guilt on all counts .

“Their action is a desecration of societal values that require accountability,” the judge declared, sentencing both men to death by hanging .

The case has reignited conversations about the safety of vulnerable individuals in Nigeria and the need for swift justice in cases of gender-based violence.
