Twenty-six patients who had been stranded over unpaid medical bills have regained their freedom after the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Dunukofia, Njikoka and Anaocha (DNA) Federal Constituency, Barr. Prince Chukwudi Oli, popularly known as Oba Ezeafia, paid a total of ₦11,150,800 to settle their hospital expenses.
The humanitarian intervention took place at the Referral Health Centre, Awgbu, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where the beneficiaries had reportedly been receiving treatment.
The payment covered the medical bills of 14 surgical patients, seven admitted patients and five out-patients, bringing relief to families who had struggled to raise funds for treatment and discharge.
Speaking with journalists after the intervention, Oli said his decision was driven by compassion and a lifelong commitment to serving humanity, stressing that kindness should never be limited by political constituencies or geographical boundaries. “Although Awgbu is outside my constituency, I don’t consider where a person comes from before offering assistance,” he said.
Describing the gesture as both a humanitarian responsibility and an expression of faith, the APGA flagbearer added:
“Every act of kindness is a service to humanity and an act of worship to God. Genuine compassion knows no political or geographical boundaries.”
Oli noted that charitable service has always been a defining part of his life, insisting that his latest intervention was consistent with years of philanthropy that predate his political ambition.
“For those who have followed my journey over the years, this benevolence is not new. It reflects a lifestyle built on charity and humanitarian service. Long before seeking elective office, I consistently invested in the welfare of the less privileged through healthcare interventions, youth empowerment, education, sports development and community support.”
He further maintained that leadership should be judged by the positive impact it has on people’s lives rather than political rhetoric.
“The decision to extend this life-saving intervention beyond my constituency reinforces my belief that leadership is measured not by words or political affiliation, but by the positive impact made in the lives of people.”
The beneficiaries and residents of Awgbu expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely, life-changing and a source of renewed hope for families who had feared they would be unable to settle their hospital bills.
Several community members commended Oli’s generosity, saying the intervention demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in compassion, selfless service and a willingness to help others regardless of tribe, religion, community or political affiliation.
For many of the beneficiaries, the payment was more than financial assistance—it was the difference between despair and fresh start.
