Obi of Onitsha Expresses Worry over Poor Voter Registration Turnout in S’east

The Obi of Onitsha, Anambra State, Igwe Alfred Achebe has expressed concerns over apparent apathy by residents the Southeast in ongoing voter registration exercises.

Achebe who made the lamentation weekend at the 2025 Onitsha Ofala festival, the 24th since he assumed the throne in 2002, called for urgent mobilization.

He regretted that only 2,482 persons pre-registered online across four South East states in the first week of the registration as against 848,359 in the South West, describing the development as alarming.

“In the first week of the INEC registration exercise, only 2,482 persons pre-registered online across four South East states, excluding Anambra, compared to 848,359 in the South West.

“This is alarming and demands urgent mobilization by our leaders,” he said.

The monarch however prayed for peaceful and transparent Anambra State gubernatorial election billed for 8 November, 2025.

“We are gearing up for the off-cycle Governorship election next month.

“The campaign is intense among the five major political parties in the contest.

“Our fervent prayer is for a peaceful and transparent election to enable the electorate to freely determine their choice in the true democratic norm and practice,” he pleaded.
