Human Rights Lawyer and Activist, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has expressed deep concern over what he called troubling development in the legal profession, calling for measures to sanitize the system.

Ejiofor, spoke through a press statement issued on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in the light of recent sanction meted out to 10 judicial officers by
the National Judicial Council (NJC), for falsifying birth dates.

According to him, the action by NJC highlights a disturbing trend of ethical decline among those sworn to uphold justice.

He said: “The NJC’s move is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the judiciary, where such acts of deception raise concerns about the integrity and credibility of the courts.

“These infractions, viewed not as mere administrative errors but as moral failings, call into question the trust that society places in legal professionals.

Ejiofor, observed that the issue of ethical decay was not limited to the judiciary alone. According to him, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has been increasingly reporting a growing list of lawyers who face suspension or disbarment due to professional misconduct.

“From negligence to outright fraud, these violations further tarnish the reputation of the legal profession and undermine the foundational principles upon which it stands.

“As the legal profession grapples with these challenges, the question arises: If those responsible for delivering justice do not adhere to the most basic standards of honesty and professionalism, what recourse do individuals have when seeking justice?

“Legal experts and practitioners are now called upon to reflect on their commitment to continuous learning and ethical practice. It is essential to foster an environment that not only holds individuals accountable but also actively works to restore the profession’s moral compass.

The IPOB lead counsel warned: “The consequences of neglecting these ideals are profound; the erosion of ethical standards in the legal field may lead to a similar decay in broader societal values.

“It is crucial for the legal profession to confront these issues head-on, reigniting a collective commitment to integrity, rigorous learning, and discipline.

“As the legal community stands at this critical juncture, the need for action is urgent. The time to reclaim the honor of the profession is now—without it, both justice and society may suffer significant consequences.
