Anambra Education Ministry Confirms Death of Pupil Beaten to Coma by a Teacher

The 8-year old child, Master Henry Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, beaten to coma by a teacher in Landmark International School Mgbakwu in Awka North local government area of Anambra State has died.

The Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Education, Nnaemeka Egwuonwa announced the death in a statement on Thursday.

He said the child who was admitted in the intensive care unit of the hospital, later gave up the ghost on the early hours of Wednesday, May 23, 2024.

The statement reads, “The suspect Mrs Faith Nwoye had earlier been invited by the Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, to explain what led to the brutalization of the child on Monday 20th May, 2024

“She was invited alongside Mrs Promise Ilo, the proprietor of Landmark School Mgbakwu, the illegal school in which the incident happened.

“The teacher who admitted flogging the child, however stated that the flogging was not as severe as the picture was painted.

“The matter was handed over to the police for investigation, while the child was in the intensive care unit of the hospital, from where he later gave up the ghost on the early hours of Wednesday 23/05/2024.”

The Commissioner had posted on her Facebook page, “He was a boy..like any other, with hopes and aspirations. He went to school for a better future but met gruesome death at the hands of the people who were supposed to help him achieve his life ambition.

“A quack teacher in an illegal school bludgeoned him to death. We mourn a life nipped in the bud! We mourn Henry Chukwuemeka Okonkwo! We mourn and we seek justice!”
