2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: Labour Party Drafts Okupe as Obi’s Running Mate

In their bid to beat the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of names for the 2023 general election, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has picked Dr Doyin Okupe, as his running mate.

It was gathered that Okupe’s selection as Obi’s deputy was a stop gap measure taken by the party to beat the clok and may be substituted on or before August 2022 when the substantive Vice Presidential Candidate of the party emerges from the ongoing rounds of consultations on the matter.

Okupe, a former presidential spokesman from Ogun state, South west is a physician and politician who co-founded Royal Cross Medical Centre. He was a former National Publicity Secretary of National Republican Convention (NRC) and was once detained under General Sani Abacha and subsequently disqualified from participating in United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries; later on. He was a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.

Okupe was Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Okupe and Obi were presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before they left the party for LP.
