Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has described the founder and Chairman of Chisco Group of Companies, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, as a worthy role model whose entrepreneurial journey offers valuable lessons for emerging business leaders.

Otti said documenting the experiences, achievements and challenges of successful Nigerian entrepreneurs was essential to inspiring younger generations, preserving business knowledge and promoting sustainable economic development.

The governor made the remarks on Thursday during the maiden Chidi Anyaegbu Annual Public Lecture Series and book presentation held at the Convocation Arena of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus, Anambra State.

He described Anyaegbu’s business journey as a testament to the transformative power of vision, hard work, diligence and competence, noting that his rise from humble beginnings to building a successful business conglomerate offered practical lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Otti commended the Chisco Group for its nearly five decades of operations and expansion into transportation, logistics, real estate, oil and gas, describing its diversification as evidence of the opportunities available to businesses driven by strategic planning and effective management.

“Chief Chidi Anyaegbu’s contributions extend beyond personal business success to include job creation, economic growth and the provision of services that support individuals and businesses across Nigeria,” the governor said.

He added that the event was not merely about celebrating an accomplished businessman but also recognising the wider impact of his investments, foresight and contributions to society.

The Abia governor also applauded the scholars, researchers and editors who contributed to the publication documenting Anyaegbu’s entrepreneurial journey, describing the work as an important resource for understanding the evolution of the Chisco Group and the realities of doing business in Nigeria.

He noted that the book highlighted some of the major challenges confronting Nigerian entrepreneurs, including poor infrastructure, inadequate road networks, unreliable electricity supply, insecurity, geopolitical uncertainties and changing customer expectations.

Otti urged participants to obtain copies of the publication, stressing that preserving the experiences of successful Nigerians would provide practical guidance for aspiring business owners and future generations.

Chairman of the occasion and former Imo State Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, also described the gathering as an opportunity to celebrate entrepreneurship, philanthropy and the values that underpin lasting success.

Udenwa challenged wealthy Igbo entrepreneurs to embrace the responsibility of giving back to society, emphasising that discipline, determination, hard work, humility and trustworthiness remained essential ingredients for building sustainable business enterprises.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of COOU, Prof. Kate Omenugha, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to initiatives that promote societal development and strengthen the relationship between academia and industry.

She said Anyaegbu’s vision for the university held significant prospects for advancing transportation education and encouraging a stronger culture of philanthropy in Nigeria.

In his response, Anyaegbu expressed appreciation to the university for providing him with an opportunity to contribute to societal development through the endowment and other projects.

He disclosed that the integrity and leadership qualities of the Vice-Chancellor influenced his decision to invest in the institution, describing her as a mover of initiatives and an achiever.

The Chisco boss also thanked the university management, organisers and other contributors for the successful planning of the event and the honour bestowed on him.

A major highlight of the occasion was the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Department of Transportation Management building and the Chidi Anyaegbu Multipurpose Auditorium.

The event also featured the presentation of a book titled, The Godfather of Transport, Chisco: Platinum Footprints of Enterprise — The Life, Legacies and Leadership of Chidi Anyaegbu, which documents the businessman’s entrepreneurial journey, leadership philosophy and contributions to the Nigerian economy.

The maiden public lecture series and book presentation underscored the importance of preserving the stories of successful entrepreneurs while encouraging knowledge transfer, philanthropy and investment in education.
