Residents of Anambra State are counting their blessings after the dramatic rescue of an elderly man who was found barely alive in a bush several days after torrential rainfall left him trapped and unable to find his way home.

The elderly man, identified as Mr. Ifeonyemetara Ezennaya, from Iffite Nnobi, Anambra State, was discovered in a helpless condition by people who had gone to work on their farms.

Witnesses said the man was soaked in mud, physically exhausted, and appeared to be at the point of losing consciousness after spending days alone in the wilderness.

A cutlass was reportedly found beside him, leading rescuers to believe he had gone to his farm before the heavy rains began. It is believed the downpour may have left him stranded, disoriented, or too weak to make his way back home.

“When we found him, he was lying helpless in the bush. He was covered in mud and looked like someone who had completely lost hope,” one of the rescuers reportedly said.

The timely discovery is being described by many as nothing short of a miracle.

Had fellow farmers not ventured into the area when they did, the outcome could have been very different.

Following his rescue, Mr. Ezennaya identified himself as a native of Iffite Nnobi in Anambra State, bringing relief to those who were trying to establish his identity and reunite him with his family.

The incident has sparked conversations about the importance of checking on elderly relatives, particularly during periods of severe weather, and ensuring family members know each other’s whereabouts before heading out.
“This rescue is a reminder that a simple phone call or informing someone where you’re going can make all the difference in an emergency,” a concerned resident said.

Community members have also praised the farmers whose quick action saved the elderly man’s life.

Many have described them as everyday heroes whose compassion and prompt response turned what could have been another heartbreaking story into one of hope.

As the rainy season continues across many parts of Nigeria, residents are being urged to take extra precautions before travelling to farms, forests, or isolated locations.

Safety advocates recommend:

– Informing family members or neighbours of your destination.
– Avoiding isolated routes during heavy rainfall.
– Carrying a charged mobile phone where network coverage is available.
– Checking on elderly relatives regularly, especially those who farm alone.

For Mr. Ifeonyemetara Ezennaya, survival came down to one fortunate encounter with people who refused to ignore someone in distress.

Sometimes, being your brother’s keeper can mean the difference between life and death.
