Anambra Police Command Vow to Punish Officers Caught Extorting Citizens

The Anambra State Police Command says it will not spare any officer caught extorting citizens while performing official duties.

The state police authority made the statement while reacting to a viral reports circulating on social media alleging that some police operatives conducting stop and search at Upper Iweka under Flyover, Onitsha detained a businessman and later extorted the sum of ₦200,000 from him before releasing him.

An official statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any officer found to have acted unprofessionally, in accordance with established procedures.

Ikenga stated that the Anambra State Police Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of the rights of all citizens.

According to him, the command had taken note of a viral complaint video alleging the unprofessional conduct of some police officers in Onitsha.

“The command wishes to inform the public that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpoko had already intercepted the complaint and immediately initiated steps to identify the officers involved in the alleged act”, Ikenga disclosed, adding that the CP, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu, has directed the DPO to produce the officers concerned for the necessary investigation and possible disciplinary action, in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Force.

Ikenga further stated that preliminary findings to aid the ongoing investigation revealed that the DPO had earlier detailed officers to identify the personnel allegedly involved in the incident.

According to him, the money allegedly collected from the victim has been returned, which indicates serious misconduct and unprofessional behaviour on the part of the officers involved.

He also noted that the involvement of a POS operator suggests a possible conspiracy in the incident.

“The Command reiterates that it will not shield any officer found culpable. Appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with established procedures.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of the rights of all citizens.
“Further developments will be communicated to the public,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, has stated that the Police response to the viral complaint video alleging unprofessional conduct of officers in Onitsha will be holistic and comprehensive.

The CP noted that beyond identifying and investigating the officers directly involved in the alleged misconduct, supervising officers under whose watch the incident occurred will also be queried as part of efforts to ensure accountability and reinforce discipline within the ranks.

He reiterated that the Command will not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct and assured members of the public that appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command remains committed to upholding professionalism, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
