The Anambra State Ministry of Health, through the Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, has strengthened its partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps in preparation for the heavy movement expected during the 2025 Christmas and New Year season..
Anambra is the first state in Nigeria to launch a fully functional Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System outside the FCT. The system was commissioned on 11 May 2023 by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, marking a major milestone in emergency healthcare delivery.
In readiness for the Yuletide rush, the Commissioner delegated the State Coordinator of ASEMSAS, Dr Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu, to lead the engagement. He was accompanied by Dr Ngozi Ifediora, the Claims Desk Officer at the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency. Several FRSC officers were present, including a representative of the Area Commander who attended on behalf of the command.
Dr Chukwulobelu gave a detailed explanation of how the stateโs emergency medical system works, outlining the response structure, triage process and ambulance activation flow. He emphasized that the first 48 hours of emergency care and ambulance transport are free of charge for every resident, reflecting the Soludo administrationโs focus on saving lives.
He also encouraged the public to use the toll-free numbers 5111 and 112, which operate 24 hours daily.
Dr Ifediora explained the claims and reimbursement process, noting that the system was designed to support accountability, sustain operations and ensure smooth service delivery.
The meeting featured a question-and-answer session that helped FRSC personnel gain a clearer understanding of emergency coordination procedures. An officer of the command later gave a vote of thanks, after which the teams took a group photograph to mark the collaboration.
Both agencies reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting lives through stronger teamwork, improved readiness and quick emergency response across the state during the festive season and beyond.
