The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, has decried the prevalence of vote buying in parts of the state, describing it as one of the biggest threats to Nigeria democracy.

Ukachukwu, who cast his vote at Polling Units 002, 011 and 012 in Osumenyi, Nnewi South Local Government Area said he was happy to perform his civic duty, not just as a candidate but as a citizen committed to the state progress.

“It feels good to be part of the process that will move our state forward not because I am contesting but because I am an Anambra citizen. It feels right to vote, and I am happy to be here,” he said.

The APC candidate, however, expressed concern over security lapses and reports of vote buying in some polling areas, urging security agencies to act decisively.

“There were hitches here and there especially in terms of security. Vote buying remains the biggest threat that witch-hunts this country. I was informed that some candidates were involved in it, and I call on security agencies to live up to expectations,” he said.

Ukachukwu maintained optimism about his chances, expressing faith in God and in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver a credible process.

Meanwhile, at Dimala Village, Osumenyi Town, a voter, Mrs. Nkechi Enwereji, described the exercise as peaceful and well coordinated. She said accreditation began around 8:30 a.m., and she voted shortly after 10:00 a.m., adding that she did not witness any form of vote buying.

Also speaking, a person with disability, Mr. Godwin Ubabunike, appealed for improved accessibility at polling centres. He narrated how he had to be assisted to reach the voting point because of the absence of ramps.

“People had to lift me up to vote. INEC should provide a paved way for people like us,” he said.

Across several polling units visited, voting was observed to be calm and orderly, with a large turnout of voters participating in the exercise.
