The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu has described the state vigilante outfit, “Operation Udo Ga Achi,” as a child of necessity born out of increasing insecurity situation in the state.
He made the disclosure at security summit/familiarization visit held at Onitsha Police Area Command during questions and answers session with members of Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, Onitsha Police Area Command chapter, residents and stakeholders in the area.
“The formation of the vigilante outfit was to assist in curbing the violent crime that enveloped the entire state.
The CP explained that members were drawn from where they were serving as security guards, among other places without proper training which prompted their being trained currently by the police to know and understand the rules of engagement.
His words, “IGP orders that the vigilante operatives be given training, some of them were security guards, and you have others drawn from different places because of the ugly situation without formal training as it was aimed to assist in curtailing the increased crime rate by the State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo.
“The law empowers them to arrest and hand over immediately to the police and by the time they finish their training they would have known the rules of engagement and act accordingly.
“Those parents and others who blame government, especially the police for the increased crime wave in the state before now that it has been reduced to zero tolerance what role have you played to ensure your children are grown with the fear of God.
“Most mothers are not praying with their children again because they are after those who are witch hunting them. Again we will not have problems if we listen as husbands to half of what our wives tell us.
“We have to be very careful, embrace peace, if we had embraced peace we would not have gotten “Udo Ga Achi security outfit. All the money people acquire is vanity because we must all die.”
The CP commended the Senior Special Assistant to the National chairman of PCRC on Interstate Project, Southeast zone, Sir Vic Agubisi, (Action chairman), and the PCRC Onitsha Police Area Command, for a successful hosting and honouring him with a chieftaincy title of “Agunechemba”.
He also commended the Onitsha Police Area Commander, Chidi Nzota, adding that he has been able to fight violent crimes within the short period he has stayed adding that the state police command will not relent in sacking men of the underworld out of the state.
In his response on behalf of the entire PCRC and, stakeholders, Sir Vic said they welcomed the CP with satisfaction sequel to his relentless efforts in fighting crime to the barest minimum despite his short stay and prayed God to guard and protect him as he forged ahead.
“The security summit is very important esoecially now that crime has been drastically reduced in the state.
“There is need to enlighten the people in the state to be alert at all times and help to maintain the peaceful atmosphere by fishing out the hoodlums still living amongst the people as the hoodlums do not live in the bush.
“It was in a bid to eradicate that ugly state of crime and maintain absolute peace that the CP Urutugu was brought to the state to do the needful and you will all agree with me that security is everyone’s business and not only left for the security operatives.
“Our CP is a crime fighter who is well trained for the job and ever ready to sacrifice anything available with him to fight crimes. We can testify that within this short period of assumption of duty the CP has restructured and repositioned the state police command for optimum performance and the result of which we are enjoying today.
“For we, members of the PCRC we shall continue to offer our undiluted support to you and your men in order to rid the state of hoodlums completely,” he stated.
