The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Inspector Okolie Amechi by his 10-year-old son in Awka, the state capital.
Spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, was attributed to an accidental discharge of the Inspectorโs AK-47 rifle by his son.
The child, unaware of the rifle’s condition, pulled the trigger, hitting his father in the back and injuring his brother in the hand.
The Inspector was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the injured son is responding to treatment.
Ikenga’s statement noted, “The Anambra State Police Command expresses sadness over the death of Inspector Okolie Amechi in Awka.
“This incident occurred on June 15, 2025, due to an accidental discharge by his 10-year-old son. The rifle, assigned to the Inspector, was mishandled, leading to the tragic shooting.
“Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead at the hospital, and his second child is receiving treatment for a hand injury.
“The AK-47 rifle has been recovered, and the deceased has been deposited in the morgue.
“The Command wishes the injured child a quick recovery and extends condolences to the family and friends of Inspector Amechi.”
