Mahogany Spartans, a non-governmental organization, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State for dismissing fake native doctors allegedly involved in aiding crimes.

The group’s president, Hon. Obiorah Gablyn Oguonu, described the removal of these individuals as a welcome development. He recalled his tenure as chairman of the local vigilante in Awka Etiti, where he prevented littering the roads with sacrificial items to mitigate environmental hazards.

“If I catch you littering the road with sacrifices, you must consume what you’ve prepared. Do your rituals at home,” he stated. “I commend the governor for the dismissal.”

Oguonu emphasized the need to imprison guilty fake native doctors as a deterrent, lamenting that he has not seen any convicted.

He also spoke out against the numerous uniformed and plainclothes individuals extorting and intimidating residents and visitors, describing their actions as a form of “ghetto treatment.”

“We don’t need this. Why is my state under terror? Upon entering Onitsha from the Niger Bridge, you’ll encounter various individuals with strange behaviors. Some are policemen, while others in greenish uniforms, known as the Ocha Brigade, commit nuisance on the roads,” Oguonu said, highlighting incidents at Upper Iweka and Ochanja market, where he witnessed the Ocha Brigade tormenting people.

Reacting to the closure of the Onitsha drug market by NAFDAC, Oguonu lamented that some have died due to this action, attributing the crisis to poor leadership. He urged traders to support one another and allow genuine businesses to operate peacefully.

“Those selling fake drugs should face consequences, while honest traders should be allowed to conduct their business. Let there be peace; Onitsha is the melting point of the Igbo,” he asserted.

Hon. Oguonu, who has provided scholarships to nine indigent students, announced that any member of the Block Rosary organization from St. Ann Parish Church in Awka Etiti and St. Jude Parish Church in Fegge, Onitsha, who passes the entrance exam into a convent or sisters’ school will also receive a scholarship. He views this initiative as a sacrifice for those unable to afford education.

Ahead of the November 8, 2025, gubernatorial election in Anambra State, Oguonu advised voters to act according to their conscience and avoid compromising their integrity for financial incentives. He emphasized the importance of ethnic and religious tolerance, regardless of political affiliation, as essential for fostering peaceful and democratic leadership free from flawed election processes.
